Original Killing Joke Lineup to Record and Tour

Finally, after numerous line-up changes through the years, all original Killing Joke members reunite for new album and world tour.

Drummer, Paul Ferguson, rejoins the line up for the first time since 1987 enabling a whole new generation of fans to see Killing Joke’s legendary original formation. Diehard fans have been waiting for this moment for two decades!

Bassist, Martin ‘Youth’ Glover also steps back into the live arena after a near 15yr hiatus, having not played live with Killing Joke since 1994’s Pandemonium tour.

The tour will see Killing Joke take up a two night residency in most venues offering a different set on each evening. On the first night, they will play their first two albums in their entirety, 1980’s self-titled album followed by the album ‘What’s This…For!’. Their second performance in each city will treat fans to 1994’s Pandemonium and the Island Records singles of ’79 to ’80.

Once described by Ferguson as ‘the sound of the earth vomiting’, Killing Joke is anthemic and grandiose in it’s evocation of nightmare visions. Taking a sarcastic jab at authority and perceived reality to a sonically charged mixture of post punk and metal, Killing Joke’s heavy guitars and pounding tribal drums conjure a primitive atmosphere of doom, gloom and resistance.
Notorious for their use of inflammatory imagery, a backlash against a world they perceived as ever more materialistic, unjust and conservative, Killing Joke, railed against the establishment and created a unique sound from their very conception.

Ironically, in the current musical climate with it’s obsession with rehashing eighties sounds, the 80s saw Killing Joke really pushing music forward, incorporating danceable elements with aggressive, grinding guitars and thumping drums. With elements of
proto-techno rock, their post apocalyptic vision has inspired bands as diverse and influential as Nirvana, Ministry, Nine Inch Nails, Foo Fighters, Soundgarden and Godflesh. Killing Joke have always been and continue to be more than just a band.

Godfathers of post-punk, Killing Joke return with their eagerly anticipated new album to coincide with their world tour. Album release date TBC.

Killing Joke Reschedule UK tour - 24th March 2006

Due to unforeseen circumstances, Killing Joke have rescheduled their forthcoming UK tour. The tour, which was due to start on 2nd April in Cambridge, will now start on 29th April in Nottingham.

An official statement from the band says "Killing Joke would like to apologise to all gatherers for the rescheduling of the British tour to promote the glorious recording Hosannas From The Basements Of Hell. This is unfortunately due to psychiatric problems within the band. We are now on fire and in anticipation of your presence. Thank you for your love and support."

Already purchased tickets will still be valid for the rescheduled shows. Full tour dates as follows :

It dumps my ID, won't even let me re-register. Apparently you cant even read the topics if you aren't registered- which I was until I was unregistered for no apparent reason. I only posted there 2 or 3 times (and innocuously, I might add) so it's not like I was banned for flaming or trolling.

XXV DVD MISSING FEATURES?

can you find the backstage features on the DVD, fucked if I can! Everything else is great, one and half hours of KJ live and Jaz explaining some his Gathering ethos, but no fucking backstage stuff, I'm already bald and so there is little hair to tare out, I even caught hold off Paul Raven on the official KJ Chat Site today and he couldnt find it either, so if you see if sporting a bald look in days to come this could be the reason reason. Got a clue?

I don't know what that translates as a gematria value but on a more straighforward level might mean I'm in for an interesting night (though I doubt it).

Anyway I thought that this is as good a place as any for me to share a particularly powerful piece of my work that I wrote based on events recounted to me by an Iraqi POW in the first Gulf War in 1991.

Am I listening with my heart, or are her words echoing around my
brain, rattling like a bullet in a biscuit tin, rattle, rattle,
rattle, trying to find meaning, rattle, rattle, rattle, translating
into a language whose forms I recognise, words, sentences,
paragraphs, creating symbols, series of symbols into actions, cause
and effect, green light go, red light stop,rattle, rattle.

As a child I was afraid of the dark, Now I'm afraid of everything.

But mostly I'm afraid of myself.

Not the reflection myself I see in the mirror,

There were no soldiers in the village.

So he went into a house, and taking the baby, he threw it into the

The babys mother tried to reach into the flames, she was screaming

Three soldiers pulled her out of the fire.
She would have been better off if they left her to burn.
They had their fun, and bored, they called another soldier,
A boy of 16 over.

"Go on fuck her" they said.
"Fuck her", over and over again, a chant,
Joined by all the soldiers in chorus,
"Fuck the bitch, fuck the bitch, fuck the bitch".

"Prove you're a man"

The boy fucked her and then, urged by his Sergeant he rammed his AK47
into her cunt and fired.

The rest of the villagers were dragged from their houses.
Some were shot on the spot.
Others, including the children, were raped.

Soon the only sounds were the crackling of the fire and the
whimpering of the dying.

I didn't sleep at all that night.
In the morning I found the girl whose baby they had burned.
She was still alive but weak,
And her mouth made no sound but a croak as her lips begged me...
'Please.....please....'
I shot her in the head.

I tell myself there was nothing I could have done.
If I had intervened my corpse would have joined theirs.
None of this would have been prevented.
My own wife a widow, and nothing gained.
My wife, a good and loving woman.
The woman with the baby perhaps a good woman too?

My wife sees me as a hero,
Returned from war where I fought for virtue,
Gods war, against the evil unbelievers.

RIP Dimebag Darryl Abbott and ???

It is though tears, heavy heart, and shock that I inform you guys that good friends and Dallas/Ft Worth's own legend Darryl Abbott has been shot and killed in Ohio on December 8. Damageplan was in the midsts of their first song of the set when a man jumped on stage shouting at them then opened fire. At this point, after talking with several people, we still do not know if Darryl's big bro Vinnie is alive or not. I do know that one other member is dead, but the police are not releasing the name as of yet.

This is one of the most horrible nights I have lived though.

Killing Joke- a meandering rant

This tribe has been very quiet, so I thought I'd ramble on about Killing Joke for a bit. I just made a new KJ comp to practice my Karate to, and I realized that making KJ comps is very time consuming because they have made so many great albums and have so many different shades in their basic approach, which has been remarkably consistent for 25 years now.

This time I picked a bunch of tracks from Fire Dances and some live tracks from Joking Apart and a recent boot from Manchester. And then I put on 'Death and Ressurection Show' and 'Asteroid'. And while I was practicing my forms, I thought- jesus, this stuff from last year is heavier and more insane than the Fire Dances tracks from 20 years earlier. And I realized how that album really made my summer last year and how it really encapsulated everything that was going through my mind at the time. Then I thought about all the bands that I've liked over the years and how most of them ultimately let me down- except Killing Joke. There's only one Killing Joke album I dont like (Outside the Gate) and it isnt really a Killing Joke album, but a Jaz solo album that EG slapped the KJ moniker on to make it sell better. (Outside the Gate is unlistenable, not even a good guilty pleasure like Cut the Crap).

I got to thinking about how KJ aren't a band like the Beatles or the Clash that had a great story or cultural significance, but they are much more like Led Zeppelin, who put everything into the music. Led Zeppelin were a great band, but they were only around for 11 years, weren't terribly prolific and didn't put any effort into building a culture around themselves . And the whole Page/Plant thing was as weak and tired as any reunion has ever been. Killing Joke is about to celebrate their 25 anniversary and word is that there's a new album in the works. That makes me slightly nervous, since I wouldn't want their success with KJ 2003 to be tarnished, but I think they are at a point where they could probably whip up something decent.

Jaz' solo stuff doesn't do anything for me, but I enjoyed some of the stuff Geordie did with Atkins. (the damage manual album was a big letdown after the mostly great EP, but any album with the sublime 'Peepshow Ghosts' is worth having). Geordie is really the heart of KJ, though only Jaz knows how to make his psychotic playing truly shine. Jaz understands that Geordie's modal riffs need a melodic counterpoint, and Jaz' background in Classical and Avant Garde music is infinitely more interesting than Chris Connelly tenth-generation Bowie clonery. And it's Geordie's obtuse chording that sets KJ head and shoulders above their numerous clones like Godflesh and Ministry. Without that evocative and dissonant guitar noise, the recipe falls flat.

So anyhow, I've been a KJ fan for most of their 25 years and have really enjoyed the lion's share of their output. There were a lot of bands that I loved as much or more than KJ at the time-the Clash, PiL, Gang of Four, U2, Psych Furs, Siouxsie, the Cure, Comsat Angels- but only Killing Joke have stayed true to their roots and continue to make music that excites me.

Here's something I wrote about the great Gregory Walker (aka Geordie) several years back (for the old AOL KJ message board, believe it or not!)

Date: 1996/03/21

Picture this.

1991. Pachyderm Studios in Canyon Falls, Minnesota. With arch-geek Steve
Albini twiddling knobs and faders now and then, a pack of aging
anglo-Punks bash away in a servicable if somewhat routine manner in the
recording studio. Aping then current Industrial Metal sounds as well as
the work they have done in the past, the sound is perfectly acceptable, if
not a bit unoriginal. Pretentious Scottish poet Chris Connelly comes in
and lays down his best Bowie imitations over the din. Then, he comes in.
Impeccably dressed in expensive Italian clothes and bearing an uncanny
resemblence to Rutger Hauer, he calmly sets up his rack in the center of
the room. He tunes up his guitar, dons a pair of headphones, and waits for
the playback. As the first string is struck, the air seems to shredded by
burning shrapnel. A sound that seems indescribable fills every corner of
your consciousness, and thoughts of savage possibility rush by in a blur.
You look through the control room glass into the studio, and the man sits
on a stool, motionless, impassive, and yet obviously possessed by a grim
state of absolute concentration. The primal, subconscious contents that
lay dormant in your brain, the hot buttons of fear, rage and awe well up
in you, and you find yourself unable to keep still. It's not dance you
find yourself performing, but a ancient and atavistic twitching, mimicing
the genetic instructions to hunt, kill, screw, and bow to the thunder
sweeping across the plains. As the playing stops, you tremble and wonder
what could have possessed you. As you ponder what you have heard, you
realize the man only played one or two simple patterns over and over
again.

Later as the folks in the control room do their best to completely bleach
the music of any color or complexity, you think back on those riffs. The
murderous rush of "Hole in the Wall", the wall of terrifying noise in
"Uninvited Guest", the Zeppelin-like swing of "Motion Sickness", The
percussive syncopation of "Mania" etc etc. and you wonder how such simple
little phrases can be so evocative. How so few notes can tell you so much
about yourself, about the deep-seated instincts that must be suppressed in
order to insure the very survival of Civilization. As the man walks into
the control booth, quietly sipping a cup of tea, laughing almost inaudibly
at a bandmate's joke, you wonder, does he realize what he is doing? Does
he realize what he can unleash?

You go to the record store, to investigate what this man has done before.
You find his band's most recent album, because that's the only thing the
crappy chainstore in the strip mall has available. You go home and put it
on. The first two songs do nothing for you, just plodding rants. The third
song, appropriately entitled "The Beautiful Dead" ,is something else. As
the band pounds out a savage syncopation, the guitar flies like
quicksilver, the aural equivalent of a flamethrower. The man plays
multiple variations on the song's main riff and you wonder, what in God's
name is he playing? After the final verse, the band patiently pounds the
riff, and the man simply plays the bass line. As the last bar of the
measure is sounded, those hot burning chords fly out of everywhere, and
you sit stunned. What is he playing? You are an experienced guitarist, you
can hear the notes, but there is something else there, something dark and
unknowable. The whole album is full of this dark, unknowable presence. In
contrast to the album whose recording you witnessed, this record is a
virtuoso diplay of guitar pyrotechnics. You start to think that aside from
being one of the best rhythym guitarists you have ever heard, this man is

For 16 years, Geordie Walker has been an unsung hero of rock guitar.
Scores of guitarists have hijacked his riffs, from Kurt Cobain in "Come as
You Are" to Mick Mars in "Dr Feelgood" to Kim Thayal in "Fourth of July"
and on and on. Artists as unlikely as Sponge, Van Halen, and Green Day
have grafted trademark aspects of his playing onto their own styles.
Dozens of Alternative rock guitarists claim him as inspiration. He is that
old cliche, a "guitarist's guitarist". But his circle of admirers is
limited to other guitarists for the most part. It is stunning to note that
a guitarist who unleashes such unbridled aural savagery with his
instrument, plays it so impassively, rarely moving onstage.

What drives him? I have never read an extensive interview with him. He
seems totally disinterested in the rock star circus. His longtime partner
does all of the talking to the press. It seems he is totally focused on
his craft. This is the mark of a true wizard. His silence creates an aura
of mystery that deepens the impact of his art. We have been told that he
is a longtime student of the Occult, but nothing more. We know little of
his influences, his personality. All we have is 16 years of ferocious,
incantational guitar magic. All we have is a sound that for 16 years has
dug into the listener's consciousness, pulling up primal instincts from
the genetic morass.

I remember seeing Killing Joke in 1989 in an outdoor concert. It was,
unfortunately a terrible concert (I have never seen a really good KJ
show), largely due to an abominal sound mix. As shrieking ethnic noise
poured out of the PA, the band walked down the street to the stage,
accompanied by a bunch of kids carrying torches. I will admit, I was
frightened. I know the potential for mass hysteria. It was a potentiality
they seemed to be actively courting. The feeling in the crowd was palpably
apprehensive. The primal fears dredged up by the torchlit procession are
unmistakable, no matter what the time or setting. The taped music sounded
like the soundtrack to a human sacrifice. As the band took the stage,
Geordie looked around and smiled, mildly of course. He was enjoying this.
The potential of 3000 drug-addled kids going insane and rioting didn't
seem to faze him at all.

As I look back on that night, I thank God that the sound ruined the show.
If it was a killer performance, the psychological atmosphere the band had
created would have not been disrupted and there would have been some
serious violence that night.

How important?
"Us & Them".....I used to live next door to an elderly couple,in their 80's, music lovers all their lives, the husband "George" grew up living nextdoor to the great bandleader Sammy kay... he new what he liked, and could be quite the honest critic... I turned them on to many cd's and loved to hear his opinion, he would always leave an honest one liner on a post it note on each cd, all of which I still have. So I gave him "Us & Them", a few days later, seeing me outside,out the door came his wife "Ann" came out exclaiming loudly.."we love that Pink Floyd"!.....George also commenting on the violin solo on track 8, "Nobody's Home".....how fucking cool is that?

I'm 46, male, avid music lover, former owner of a music magazine, here in Florida, I was introduced to Killing Joke by one of my writers back in the 90's, who later went on to form his own lable (Stiff Pole records), Stiff kept tellin' me about these guys, then he went to see them locally here back in the 90's(I missed the show), when he told me that only 100 or so showed up, is when I really took interest, as thats usually a good indicator to me that the music is not just good, but really good. Eventually I bought Pandaemonium, and found it to be un-fuckin'-believable, musically & lyrically, really relating to me, my lsd, 'shroom takin' cannabis using, hard trippin' music lovin', self realized self. A few years have gone by, and Saturday, at Borders of all places, the new one "jumped out" at me....again.....the musical intensity along with lyrical depth that really gets in there, like no others have done for years.

The tunes that really get to me are: Millenium, Communion, Pleasures of the Flesh, Mathamatics of Chaos, Death & Resurection, Total Invasion, Loose Cannon, Dark Forces, and, The House that Pain Built, the lyrics hit me deep in the psyche of my DNA, and provide, what Zappa would call , "conceptual continuity", and what I call "Musical Theosophy", lyrical understanding of who, what, and where, we all are, unadulterated, as only art can do.

Also, a few years back, in a bargain bin for 1.99, I picked up a CD entitled "Us & Them" a symphonic Pink Floyd cover Cd, produced & arranged by Mr. Coleman, and Youth, Colemans Arabic violin work on this one, can bring you to tears, truly endorsing his complex musical virtuosity.

Quiet B4 storm

Damn, this place got all quiet....

Heard from Raven the other day. Big plans for tour around Oct. 2004 thru late 2005. Plans are to more extensively cover places missed 2004.

Also, Ted has been replaced on the drum throne. Still cant tell who the front runner is, but I hear he is a bit of a 'tool'. Yes, we are gonna start that again. It remains to be seen who or what will be signed on the dotted line, as to who...or what will go on the road, and take over drumming duties.

Will let everyone know when I hear from a tour manager, as to what the dates of the tour (if any...let us be real here..this is Killing Joke we're talking about) will be, and are official.

Ok, here it is, the one true rant, from someone who has spent the last two years in the termite mound, dealing with termite intellect, and the drive of a tree sloth.

Looks like that DVD we have been waiting for will not happen when we have all expected it. Looks like everyone and their out of work uncles have their hands out for a piece, and we get stuck in the ass again. Bend over for your implant!

Not only was it a complete nightmare to even find the release date of the CD last year, but there was no promotion. I contacted Zuma and Red Inc. (the distributor in the States) and asked them where I could be of assistance. Would they like me to organize a street team/effort, would Murray (the head guy at Zuma) like me to help get the Zuma site launched, when the release dates were, so on and so forth. I was told by David, at Red Inc, that they had not been given the funds to support even a street level promo of the album, that he could not give me the OK to do it on my own. So I ask Murray about that. I am still waiting to hear back on that one. You see, without permission to use images and aspects of what is going on, I run the risk of getting sued. So, here I continue to sit. As for the Zuma web site, Murray told me they had it covered and it would be launched the date that the site www.killingjoke.com would be launched. That was close to a year ago...and the site still has not been launched. Now, if they cant even launch their own site, what hope do we have that they will do even a decent job at the promotion of the band?

It also comes to my attention that the official killing Joke site still has coming soon on aspects from over a year ago, as well as a contest from V2003.

What bothers me most about all this is that so many people that I am in contact with, have sacrificed so much, and have basically been given a cock in the ass, minus the lube. Myself included.

So what happens next? Fuck, who knows with these guys? A lot of posturing, a lot of talking, and very little action, I suspect. You know, status quo.

I do know that after over two years of this, going completely blind ass fucking broke doing something that "I believe in" busting my ass for this band, and then getting it in the ass with empty promises (see the chat transcript for more info on that one...), and a half assed management company that refuses to get shit produced and promo'ed properly, I have about had my fill of the fucked up shit.

If the band themselves don't care, why should I.....fuck it all
